Are You Vehicularly Addicted Too?

Morning!

It’s almost noon, March 15, 2020, my 60th birthday. Yep, I hit a “Speed Limit” this year.

Although I’ve done a soft launch of Vehicular Addition, today is actually the hard launch day. Figured my birthday would also be Vehicular Addiction’s “official” birthday.

I’ve been infatuated with cars and trucks, as far back as I can remember (Airplanes too), so I wore out the knees of many a pair of pajama pants, and britches, driving cars and trucks around on floors, and out in the dirt, or on sidewalks.

At the young age of 5, my parents bought their first brand new car, a 1965 Impala Super Sport, and I was really hooked. When I was 13, I told my Dad not to sell the Impala, as I wanted it. Well, when I was 15, my Grandmother’s car died and Dad loaned her the Impala for as long as she needed it.

With the Impala with my Grandmother, I had to find another first car, which was a 1968 Chevy Malibu. It lasted about a year with me, until I stuck it trunk first into a ditch, turning it into a shorter car. The Malibu was followed by a 1965 White Mustang Hardtop, with a 289 and 3-speed. I got T-Boned in it, when I was at Texas A&M. I had a second car at the time, a 1974 Mustang II, Hatchback, which I later sold to buy a 1966 Mustang Hardtop, with a 289 and AT.

I later sold that Mustang when I moved to Denton, Texas, to finish my first degree at UNT. I was driving a 1974 Fiat Spider Convertible at the time.

In 1982, I bought a 1964 Chevy C-10 Step Side, with a 230 Straight Six and a Three on the Tree, that became my daily driver after I sold the Fiat, which was becoming costly in upkeep. The 1964 C-10, which I named “Gramps,” was my, back into vintage vehicles, truck. Actually, Gramps was my first Pick Up.

We named it “Gramps,” and used it hard until 1989, when the back brakes locked up on an icy road, spinning me into a dumpster. After driving it a bit more, I parked it when I bought a 1980 Ford F-150 Extended Cab, which we named “Stretch.”

You’ll find soon find out that we named almost all of our vehicles.

In 1998, while visiting my Mother in Cuero, Texas, we spotted a 1966 Vintage Burgundy Mustang Hardtop at a small show in the K-Mart parking lot, in the neighboring town of Victoria.

Of course, we had to stop and look at the cars, as my Mom was into vintage vehicles also. Well . . the Mustang had a for sale sign in the windshield and the owner convinced me to take it for a spin. Long story short, we made a deal and I pulled together a deposit to hold it until I could get him the rest of the money. Thus, I had just purchased my second vintage vehicle.

Seventeen years after the 1965 Impala went to my Grandmother, it came to me, a rusty old, worn out car. Luckily, my ex-wife was willing to let me have it restored, which I did in 2009-2010. “Double S“, as I call the Impala, turned out very nice, with the addition of an overdrive transmission, disc front brakes, and Cragar SS wheels, with BF Goodrich Radial TA’s all around. That’s Double S in the photo above.

There’s more vehicles to tell about, but that’s enough for now.

How about you? What vintage vehicles have you had, or own now?
